In the tumultuous political and religious situation in the Middle East at the beginning of our era, there emerged something new with immense transformational power: Christianity. Founded by Jesus Christ, from today’s perspective, it seems like the usual patriarchal success story, that spread into the far corners of the world. But what if suddenly his mother appeared before us in flesh and blood? She was there when it all happened. This woman is pictured millions of times, is adored and worshipped by two billion believers, but actually does not have a voice of her own. Irish author Colm Tóibín brings her down from the pedestal of the altar to everyday reality and finally lets her speak for herself. Mary takes the floor and talks about what it is like to be an ordinary woman caught up in the maelstrom of history.
